Minari [Trailer]

New trailer alert! New A24 trailer alert! Steven Yeun starring in an A24 film? Let’s watch, let’s talk.

Arianne and I have this ongoing discussion about the type of films that play at Sundance, and the type of films that play at SXSW. And which films we end up preferring, and while of course, there’s a lot of overlap, I’m a Sundance person, they’re a SXSW person. Though I expect she will love this, this trailer looks like it’s going to gut me.

As the YouTube description says, it’s from writer/director Lee Isaac Chung and starring Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, and Yuh-Jung Youn. Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother.

Steven Yeun made his big break and we all learned about him after The Walking Dead. I, like most people, watched it in it’s early seasons and slowly drifted away from the show. And (spoiler, I guess?) once Glenn died, I no longer cared for the show anymore. But I’ve been watching Yeun’s career blossom and it’s one of my favourite things. To see him work with other great directors like Bong Joon-ho, Boots Riley, and of course, Lee Chang-dong. He took the route that people like Robert Pattinson took, earn his respect and now he gets to choose which directors to work with. We love to see it.

And I can’t wait to see this film and have it tear my heart apart. It says coming soon, but I need it now.
