Sometimes just from a premise of a show, you just know something is for you. I usually navigate more towards comedy when it comes to television but sometimes a dramatic show will come and sweep me off my feet. Away comes from a team that I trust. Produced by Matt Reeves (Felicity, The Batman, Cloverfield) and Jason Katims (Roswell, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) and starring Oscar winner Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry, Million Dollar Baby), it had everything to succeed. My only concern was how one could sustain a drama set during a mission to Mars where most of the show would take place onboard a ship. Well, Away was capable of finding a way and make a show that maybe isn’t always on point but certainly shows it’s potential.
Another day, another write-up for a trailer for a movie you’ve never heard of from a writer who’s been waiting for this moment for months.
James Gray may not be a name you’re really aware of, and that’s fine, he wasn’t a recognizable name for me until recently. But today, we’re going to change that. In 1994, he made his debut feature Little Odessa, and in 2000 he directed and co-wrote The Yards (with Matt Reeves, remember that name for a second).
Some of us saw this coming, the review is finally here.
I try to see as many films by A24 as possible for many reasons. One, being they have a great track record of putting out some of my favourite films for the last three years, First Reformed, Good Time, and Moonlight. But also similarly to Blumhouse, something A24 seemingly does is that they try and push the director’s vision. They allow for that opportunity, and they lean into the bizarre. Some of the films that were released in their first year were James Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now, but also released Harmony Korine’s epic Spring Breakers.
It’s peak television time, which means that way too often amazing shows pass by us before we even hear of them. You might think you are watching the best shows but you are probably missing some of the best television because no one can watch everything, and believe me I’ve tried. So I’ve decided to put together a small list of gems that not enough people watch and try to explain why you should.
