I have no idea how to describe this film. This might just be the weirdest comedy I have seen in a very long time. A film that shouldn’t work and yet it does. The trailers don’t even give justice to what this film is, I don’t think anyone can understand how weird this film is until they sit down and watch it. Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar is probably the closest we will get to another Austin Powers film. This might be the most chaotic and weird review that I will do, but it will be in the image of the film honestly.
I don’t think a description of Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar would do this film justice. Because it is simply batshit crazy. Honestly, all I knew going in was that it was about two best friends going on vacation. And, you should go in knowing only that too because everything else is such a wild and insane surprise that every time something insane happened, I found myself asking “What the hell is happening?” Written by Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Wonder Woman 1984) and Annie Mumulo (Bridesmaids, Bad Moms), it shouldn’t be surprising that this film is just craziness after craziness, after all, these are the two women who gave us Bridesmaids. And yet, nothing prepared me for this. These two together are just pure gold, it’s clear that they understand each other’s comedic timing perfectly, because every time they appear on screen together, it’s just pure pleasure. I could watch these two for hours and I hope that we get a lot more films of them just being silly like this because it works.

If Wiig and Mumulo being incredible isn’t surprising, Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Grey, The Fall) really steals the show. I have seen Dornan mostly in dramatic roles, so to see him use his comedic shop was extraordinary. I thought he was going to be the straight man for Wiig and Mumulo, but while he might not have had the big moments as they have, he wasn’t the typical straight man you are used to in comedies. He has one moment in the film that just had me in tears. I don’t want to give too much away but it involves birds and music and honestly, I just couldn’t believe what I was watching. It was so insane and yet, I was into it. He just owned every second he was on screen and I just hope we get to watch more of him in this setting because it was so different and yet, it suited him perfectly.
Describing what I felt watching Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar is almost impossible. It’s the type of comedy that is truly a hit or miss, but this works. It’s wild and sometimes you think that it’s too much but then the film finds a way to ground itself in reality. It knows when to take it far and when not to. Because the base of the whole film is the friendship between Barb and Star. These two idiots are the main relationship and the film never forgets that. It might get swept in an over the top story but that doesn’t matter because the friendship that is at the center of this film is just heartwarming. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo’s friendship reads so well off the screen and you can tell how much fun they are having. And that is what this film reads as a group of people having fun doing the most ridiculous stuff and it is so fun to watch. It’s easy to forgive its flaws because of that reason.

Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar should be enjoyed with a nice glass of wine and in a perfect (and COVID free world) with a group of friends. It’s the kind of comedy that you tell people have seen this yet. It’s a comedy that is so out there and yet, everyone will understand. Cool cameos, great performances and a script that works even when it shouldn’t. It’s a comedy that I can’t wait to revisit with a group of friends and laugh at every silly jokes.
I know, this review doesn’t give a lot away but honestly, even if I described to you what this film was, you wouldn’t believe me. You would have to see it to believe it. So if I can say one thing, is watch this film. Go in blind and enjoy the madness that is Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar because it is so worth it.
