Newsflash for everyone that doesn’t know me that well… I am a Broadway geek. I devour cast albums at a rapid pace and try to go (or at least tried before COVID was a thing) see shows in New York (or Toronto when they come over here) whenever I can. I can recite the entire Hamilton album by heart and grew up obsessed with Cats (and yes, I did go see the film, we just don’t talk about that.)
Last year, I was supposed to go to New York and watch a little show called The Prom but before the date, I had my tickets, the show closed down and my dreams were crushed. But I still had the album, still had the book, and I was satisfied. Then arrived Ryan Murphy who decided to give me everything I ever wanted, a film of this musical that I had felt seen by for the very first time. See the thing about The Prom is that unlike most musical it centers around LGBTQ+ themes and two young women just wanting one thing, going to prom together. It’s not groundbreaking in its music and frankly not the best musical out there but the theme and premise of it made me so happy that I became obsessed with everything it was.
So I have been waiting and waiting, patiently (or not) for this to arrive at me. And today, not only do we get a teaser trailer (also not really a teaser because Netflix loves their long trailer but that is another conversation entirely) but it also looks good? Look, I have very high expectations for this. Ryan Murphy is good, he made me love Glee and rewatching it that was a feat of grandiose strength, but let’s be honest… He’s not the greatest when it comes to lesbians… And yes, I know, he just created Ratched but even then she’s the villain so I rest my case. But I have faith, faith that the writers (who also wrote the musical itself) will come through, hope that this stellar cast gives me the movie I deserve, hope that I don’t get disappointed…
But I have talked too much. Now let the show begin!
